The Guardian
The Guardian is the English-language daily of The Guardian Limited came off the presses on January 1st 1995 (date of registration: May 3rd 1993). When The Guardian Limited was established, it posed a competition to the papers that were already in the print-media market. In August 1996, the newspaper back then was edited by Wallace Mauggo in a run of 10,000 copies in Dar es Salaam.
Today, as a GeoPoll media consumption survey (Aug 30 – Sep 1st, 2018) shows, The Guardian is barely in the top ten of most popular newspapers focues on news (under XX.XXX% audience share). According to the publishing house, its circulation currently stands at a tune of 15,000 copies per day countrywide, while a copy is read between 2 to 6 readers.
A pilot study on media quality commissioned by the Media Council of Tanzania showed that amongst print media The Guardian is leading when it comes to a well-thought through structure: every second story has a clear cut idea and leads the reader through the story from the beginning to the end. Like in most publications, also The Guardian shows its sources very transparently.
The Guardian Limited currently publishes two daily newspapers, The Guardian and Nipashe, and four weeklies. The Guardian on Sunday and Nipashe Jumapili are Sunday publications, while Taifa Letu is published on Fridays and Sema Usikike on Mondays. The Guardian Limited is part of the IPP Group Limited.
IPP Group Limited is a manufacturing, bottling and media conglomerate, which includes television, radio stations and newspapers. Its company profile requested at the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) shows that Dr. Reginald Mengi is shareholder of IPP Group Limited but also Agapitus Leon Nguma.
Mengi was born in 1944 in Tanzania. He is a Tanzanian philanthropist, industrialist, media tycoon and the founder/Executive Chairman of IPP Group. He also is the vice president of the National Board of Accountants and Auditors, Tanzania. Mengi was featured in FORBES’ ranking of Africa’s richest people with a fortune of more than $400 million in 2015.
Agapitus Leon Nguma was the former company secretary and shareholder. He passed away on May 1st, 2018. He was also Director of the Guardian Ltd. and Bonite Bottlers Ltd. Lawyer by profession.
