Since its establishment, Jamii media has been experiencing pressures and threat from varius people incuding politicians and government officials. This situation was also noted in February, 2008 when the owners were arrested by the Police for an interrogation on suspicion of criminal activity. However, no evidence was found to back that allegation.

Jamii Media filed a Constitutional case in 2016 at High of Tanzania against Tanzania Police force asking the court to declare that the Police power to demand personal information on individual suspected of crimes under Sections 32 and 38 of the Cyber Crime Act, 2015, is unconstitutional. In March, 2017 the High court announced that said Provisions were constitutional.

In December 2016, Melo and Mushi were arraigned before the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court and charged with three criminal offences: of managing a domain that is not registered in Tanzania contrary to Electronic and Postal Communication Act of 2010 and offence of obstructing Investigation on sensitive information published by user members (whistleblower) on Jamii Website contrary to section 22(2) of Cyber Crimes Act of 2015. In June, 2018 they were acquitted by Magistrate’s court as the court found that they have no case to answer for the alleged offence of obstructing investigations in contravention of Cyber Crimes Act, 2015. To date (October, 2018), they have remain charged with two cases which is still on prosecution witnesses hearing.
