Azam Media Limited (AML) is a television broadcasting company registered in December 2103. Though new in the broadcasting industry, AML has, for few years of its existence, grown to become one of the media companies with state of the art broadcasting infrastructure. AML which runs a pay TV service is present on the DHT platform.
AML is a subsidiary of Bakhresa Group, a family owned business group and one of the leading industrial houses in Tanzania with investment primarily in food and beverage sector, packaging, logistics, marine passenger services, petroleum and entertainment. The Group also boasts one of the biggest football club in Tanzania - Azam Foot Club. According to their own website, Bakhresa Group has a turnover of more than eight hundred million USD, and more than eight thousand employees. It was founded by Said Salim Awadh Bakhresa, a well-known industrialist who began as a small restaurateur in the seventies and created a business empire within a span of four decades. Said Salim Bakhresa is today still a chairman of Bakhresa Group.
Azam Media Limited is managed by Yusuf Said Salim Bakhresa, one of four sons to the founder of Bakhresa Group. According to the Tanzanian Communication Regulation Authority, Yusuf Said is also shareholder of Azam Media Limited, just like his brothers Abubakar Said Salim Bakhresa, Omar Said Salim Bakhresa and Mohammed Salim Bakhresa. They each hold 5% of the shares while Said Salim Bakhresa & Co. Ltd – again a subsidiary of Bakhresha Group of Companies – holds the the majority shares of 80%.
The brothers are also all on the board of directors in the Bakhresa Group, which has its operations spread in whole of East Africa, Malawi, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo and South Africa.
Azam Media is registered in Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) (No. 95870) and the company file was available. It listed the above mentioned shareholder. It further stated a mortgage dated on 12nd June, 2013 in favour of Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited to secure USD 8,000,000. The annual return is filed up to 2017.
