MWANANCHI newspaper was registered with the Registrar of Newspapers on April 20, 2000 and on May 27, 2000 the first copy of the newspaper rolled off the presses. MWANANCHI is currently the Kiswahili-language leading newspaper with the largest audience share (XX.XXX%) according to a GeoPoll media consumption study for Q2, 2018.
MWANANCHI carries magazines and pull-out magazines on different subjects and in different days of the week. SpotiMikiki is a sports magazine published every Monday and Uchumi is a magazine that focusess on business news, events and economic matters and is published every Thursday. Jungukuu is a society issues magazine published every Friday while Starehe is a sports magazine published every Saturday. Siasa is focuses on analysis of recent political events and investigative stories and is a pull-out published every Tuesday and Maarifa is a platform for sharing among students and teachers and is a pull-out published every Wednesday. Fahari is a special pull-out magazine targeted at the female reader, with articles on fashion, decor, beuty, short stories, parenting advocate etc and is published every Sunday.
MWANANCHI newspaper is published by Mwananchi Communication Limited. Other Kiswahili language newspapers published by the Company are MWANANCHI JUMAPILI which is a Sunday edition of MWANANCHI and MWANASPOTI, a bi-weekly sports and entertainment newspaper that was launched on February 12, 2001. MCL also publishes two English-language newspapers namely THE CITIZEN and its Suday edition THE SUNDAY CITIZEN.
Mwananchi Communication Limited was established in 2001 when Ambassador Ferdnand Ruhinda teamed up with Rostam Aziz to established. Prior to that Ambassador Ruhinda has established in 1999 a communication company, Media Communications Limited which later became Mwananchi Communication Limited.
