It was first published in 1995 by Mtanzania Limited with 20.000 copies. After it was owned by Habari Corporation Limited, it now is published by New Habari (2006) Limited.
According to Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (2018), New Habari (2006) Limited is owned by two shareholders, namely by Hassan Haidari (750 shares) and Gulam Abdulrasul who as well hold 750 shares of the company. While the shareholders on paper are not very well known, Tanzania’s first billionaire and former MP of the governing party CCM, Rostam Aziz, is known as owner and investor, e.g. according to an IREX publication and Forbes. He has publicly stated that he has acquired Habari Corp (HCL), a company publishing several newspapers and the proprietor of the media training institute Mamet. However, his name does not appear on the list of shareholders of Isenegeja which effected this purchase, nor on that of New Habari which was created to run this press company and which he nevertheless claims to own. Besides that, Aziz also has a shareholding in Vodacom Tanzania and also built a fortune from stakes in contract mining firm Caspian Mining, a Port in Dar es Salaam, extensive real estate in Tanzania and the Middle East.
In 2013, Mtanzania was banned for 90 days by the government due to “emotional” reporting.
The company registered office of business is at Bibi Titi Mohamed Street, Dares salaam Plot No. 236. According to BRELA (2018), the Company is required to update the records on the online registration system (ORS).
