Habari Leo
Habari Leo is a Kiswahili language daily tabloid published by Tanzania Standard Newspapers Limited (TSN). Founded in 2006 by TSN, Habari Leo is owned by the government of the United Republic of Tanzania that holds 99% shares and the Managing Editor holds 1% share.
The Editor-in-Chief is the President of the United Republic of Tanzania but the Managing Editor is the chief executive officer and contact person.
Retired President Jakay Kikwete gave two main reasons for launching Habari Leo. He said the government belong to the people hence it was important they receive government information from their own government and following the mushrooming of private newspapers after adoptation of multiparty system and media deregulation, Habari Leo would promote peace and harmony in society (Habari Leo, 31/03/2017).
Acting Managing Editor said that Habari Leo has a nation wide coverage and it produces balanced coverage on economics, politics, national and international affairs, transparency and advertising. According to the Acting Managing Editor, advertising and market share of Habari Leo are 6.5% and 10% respectively.
According to a Tanzania Audience Measurement report by GeoPoll, commissioned by MCT, Habari Leo’s readership stands at XX.XXX%. This means it is ranked fourth among news-focused publications.
