Daily News
Daily News is published by the Tanzania Standard Newspapers Ltd which is owned by the government of the United Republic of Tanzania that holds 99% shares and the Managing Editor hold 1% share. The Editor-in-Chief is the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, but the Managing Editor is the chief executive officer and contact person.
According to a Tanzania Audience Measurement report by GeoPoll, commissioned by MCT, Daily News is not as widely-read as it used to be, and thus not ranked in the Top Ten. However, because of its historical impact and as a must-read for opinion leaders and decision-makers in governmental agencies, it is included in the selection. Daily News rolled off the press on February 5, 1970 when the government of the United Republic of Tanzania nationalized the Tanganyika Standard Newspapers Limited and its newspaper, The Standard (Tanzania). Daily News is a merger between Standard (Tanzania) and The Nationalist that roled off the press on April 17, 1964. The Nationalist was a daily English tabloid that was owned by the political party Tanganyika African Nation Union (TANU) that speare headed the struggle for independence in Tanzania mainland and ruled the country until February 5, 1977 when it was renamed Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and is still in power today.
However, the history of Daily News even further goes back to January 1, 1930 when the first issue of the Tanganyika Standard rolled off the press. From 1930 to 1967 Tanganyika Standard was published by East Africa Consolidated Holdings which was later acquired by the British business group London-Rhodesia (LONRHO). On November 7, 1954, the Sunday News appeared as a weekly edition of Tanganyika Standard.
Tanganyika Standard was renamed The Standard (Tanzania) after the Union of Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar to form the United republic of Tanzania. On February 5, 1970 the government nationalized The Standard (Tanzania) and on January 16, 1976 The Standard Tanzania was merged with The Nationalist to form the Daily News.
